David N. Smith, deputy secretary of Commerce and Trade for the Commonwealth of Virginia, will be a special guest at the Business Appreciation Reception Tuesday.

All area businesses are invited to attend the reception from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Moowmaw Center at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.

The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce, the Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Corporation and Dabney S. Lancaster Community College are hosting the event to recognize the business community.

Smith was appointed by Governor Tim Kaine in January of 2006. Prior to joining Governor Kaine's Cabinet, he was a vice president with Consolidated Bank and Trust Company and focused on Commercial and Community Development Banking.

Before joining Consolidated Bank, Smith had an eight year career with Bank of America as a vice president and focused on Small Business, Faith Based Lending, and Community Development Banking. He has worked for CSX Transportation and the DuPont Company. His business career spans over 30 years.

Smith is active in several charitable and business organizations including the YMCA, Henrico County Schools, the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, and Saint Pauls College. He is a native of Columbia, SC and a graduate of the University of South Carolina.
